Bio
I am a PhD candidate in Political Science and Sociology at Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) of Pisa. I am in my final year of the program and I am hence drafting my thesis. My work delves into the mainstream left’s response to the rise of the populist radical right in Central and Eastern Europe, with particular attention to forms of collaboration between the two. I mainly employ qualitative methods, namely semi-structured interviews to party elites and experts, process tracing and critical discourse analysis. During my Master degree at the University of Bologna, I spent one year at the Université Libre de Bruxelles through and Erasmus+ programme.

My thesis reconstructs the ideological evolution of the communist successor parties of Romania and Bulgaria (the results are tested on two control cases, namely Czechia and Slovakia). The work looks in particular at the ways in which the Left has responded to the emergence of radical right parties, thus delving into strategies of co-optation or cordon sanitaire. Preliminary results show that the position of the two on the Russian invasion of Ukraine has a determinant impact on the outcome. I am interested in carrying on side projects, in particular focused on left-wing nationalism and the diffusion of left-wing illiberal paradigms in Europe.
