Presentation
This double seminar of the Cevipol Europe axis will explore the interactive dynamics in the EU between the national and supranational level, focusing first on the case of Hungary's approach to rule of law conditionalities and, second, on why the EU failed to combat rising authoritarianism and how it can defend democratic governance in member states.
Bio
Kinga Koranyi is a PhD candidate at the Hertie School. Her research explores the conditions for the emergence of welfare policy transfers in a comparative framework, focusing on Canada, Switzerland and the United States, in order to understand contemporary and future policy directions for the EU’s cohesion agenda.
Tom Theuns is Senior Assistant Professor of Political Theory and European Politics at Leiden University’s Institute of Political Science, and Associate Researcher at Sciences Po in Paris. He is the author of 'Protecting Democracy in Europe: Pluralism, Autocracy and the Future of the EU' (Hurst, 2024).
