The Presidency in Context: David Sassoli’s Political Biography and Leadership in the European Parliament

Abstract
The aim of this project is to reconstruct the political biography of the former European Parliament President David Sassoli.
The research is divided into two sections. The first focuses on historical path of his early years and initial political experiences, which ultimately led to his presidency. The second examines Sassoli’s interpretation of the presidential role and his political choices in guiding the Parliament through major challenges, including Brexit, Catalan issue and the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the ways in which the presidency engaged in dialogued with other institution. The study draws primarily on Italian newspapers (Il Popolo, La Discussione) and selected Cabinet documents.
