Perceptions of Threat, Intergroup Relations and Polarization (2027 - 2031)

Abstract

This project aims to analyze how perceptions of threat mediate the link between authoritarian attitudes and far right support, and whether this relation is context dependent. Addressing this research question systematically connects and integrates our theoretical frameworks and expands our empirical designs.

First, the proposal will develop a shared conceptual framework (WP1) that links micro-level psychological dispositions to meso- and macro-level political attitudes and behaviors. Second, the new proposal will aim at cross-building and validating planned data collection and coordinating new data collection using shared instruments (WP2).

By integrating insights from social psychology and political science, the project will improve our understanding of the role of threats on polarization and intergroup conflict, and of the conditions of democratic resilience. We aim to generate evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and civil society actors, and enhance the international visibility and impact of both research lines (WP3).
