Conservative Movements in the Illiberal Era: Comparative and Transnational Perspectives. Introduction to the special issue

Abstract

This special issue seeks to contribute to the rapidly growing body of scholarly literature that has, over the past decade, examined the global reconfiguration of right-wing political forces. After a brief review of this literature, this introduction presents the framework for our research and highlights key findings. This framework — understood as political mobilization with the aim of preserving or restoring traditional, religious, moral or political forms of authority — allows for moving across disciplinary boundaries (between the study of social movements, the sociology of elites and the social history of ideas) and exploring a variety of topics (such as party politics, social movements, think tanks and ideologies). Based on extensive empirical research conducted in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, as well as Brazil, Turkey and the United States, the articles in this special issue examine conservative movements in various historical contexts: their emergence and growth, their actors and forms of protest, their transnational relations and influence on state policies.
