Bio
Alene N. Kaneza is a PhD student in Political Science at both Université Libre de Bruxelles and University of Burundi. His research focuses on authoritarian regimes and international sanctions. As part of her thesis project, she aims to analyze the role of international sanctions in the process of authoritarian decompression in Burundi, comparing the periods from 1996-1999 and 2016-2022, under the supervision of Prof. Jean Michel De Waele and Prof. Julien Nimubona.
She holds a master’s degree in governance science from the International Leadership University and a bachelor’s degree in political science and international Relations from the Université du Lac Tanganyika in Burundi.

- 2024-2025: * RIPC Project- International Sanctions as a Bargaining Tool: A Comparative Study between the Periods 1996-1999 and 2016-2022;
* In addition, I am developing the fundamental tenets of my research, namely the concepts of "actor" and "conflict." My objective is to reposition these concepts as pivotal elements in the process of authoritarian decompression, thereby enhancing their significance within the research framework.
*Programme Afrique- Noria research Project- International sanctions in the mirror of colonialism.
- 2023-2024 : Thesis Project : the role of international sanctions in the process of authoritarian decompression in Burundi, comparing the experiences of the country between 1996-1999 and 2016-2022. The research focuses on the behaviour of authoritarian regimes in the face of international pressure.
