Bio
Marina Garcia-Castillo is a PhD candidate in the Interuniversity Doctoral Programme in Gender Studies, affiliated with the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Global Studies from UPF and a Master’s degree in Women’s, Gender and Citizenship Studies (IIEDG). Her research focuses on how to integrate intersectionality into public policy, particularly at the intersection of LGBTIQ policies and cultural and religious diversity policies. She also studies the lived experiences of LGTBI+ people from Muslim backgrounds, Islamophobia, and equality in education.
Marina is a member of the consolidated research group GETLIHC on Gender Studies, where she contributes to several European and Catalan projects, including InterHEd, Zoom Out, Rights and Inequalities at the Intersection, and Transformative Policies for Critical Intersections.
She has undertaken research stays at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (CEVIPOL) and the Universidad de Chile (FACSO), strengthening the comparative and transnational dimension of her work.
Beyond academia, she collaborates with public administrations in the design and implementation of participatory projects focused on knowledge transfer and the co-creation of inclusive public policies.

Marina Garcia-Castillo’s research lies within the field of gender studies and focuses on the intersections between gender, sexuality, religious and cultural diversity, and public policy.
Her work explores the lived experiences of LGTBI+ people from Muslim backgrounds, the dynamics of Islamophobia, and the implementation of intersectionality in equality and sectoral policies as well as in education.
She is currently involved in several collaborative projects, including InterHEd – Intersectionality in Higher Education (Erasmus+ Programme, 2023–2026), Zoom Out – Approaching children’s literature from an intersectional perspective (Erasmus+ Programme, 2023–2026), and Transformative Policies for Critical Intersections (Impacte Programme, Government of Catalonia, 2025–2027).
Her research aims to contribute to the development of more inclusive public policies, grounded in critical and intersectional approaches. - Publications
